I just wanna play Ball

It has been a great 17 days of Olympic competition.  There are new world records, athletes with little media attention before are now in the spot light, a sprinter who broke his leg during a race.  Some of the top competitors have committed to Rio in 2016, others are on their way to retirement.

While watching the USA women’s basketball gold medal game yesterday, a feeling of pride washed over me.  No other team, male or female, has ever won 5 straight gold medals in a specific sport.  This is such a great testament to the effort, dedication and teamwork this group of women displays.

Nearly 2/3 of the medals won by the USA in London belong to women.  This year marks the 40th Anniversary for Title IX.  Title IX, part of a major amendment by Congress to U.S. education laws to improve equal opportunities, stated that no one should be barred from taking part in any education program or activity on the basis of their sex.  This means more opportunities for girls to play ball and do what they love.

Billie Jean King.  Pat Summit.  Martina Navratilova.  Mia Hamm.  Sheryl Swoops.  Flo-Jo.  Lisa Fernandez.  Nancy Lopez.  Kristine Lilly.  These are just a few of the many women that have paved the way to create opportunities for girls to do what they love- play ball.

be well-
